St. Brendan´s College
Buenos Aires - Argentina

St. Brendan´s College is a private Argentine school founded, in 1966, by John Joseph Scanlan, an Irishman, and his wife, Nelly Durand. At present it is owned and run by the Scanlan family, the 2nd and 3rd generation.
It is a lay organisation but with strong Roman Catholic orientation and pastoral care. The school was traditionally a boys´ school but, in 1996, girls were incorporated and today, St. Brendan´s College is a co-educational institution.
Up to Grade 10, the local curriculum in Spanish is taught in the morning and a British-type curriculum is taught in the afternoon. In the last two years of secondary school, the school has its own government-approved special bilingual plan in which the different curricula have been integrated and which is an extensive pre-university course taught 50% in English and 50% in Spanish. Cambridge International University Exams (C.I.E.) begin in Primary at P.E.T. level and then go on to I.G.C.S.E. (International General Certificate of Secondary Education/I.C.E.) level in Grades 9 and 10, finishing with Advanced Subsidiary exams in the students´ final year at school.
St. Brendan´s College graduates go on to the different local private and state-run universities. To undergo undergraduate and post-graduate studies, some of our graduates have applied and entered universities in England, U.S.A., Germany, Canada and Ireland.
The school is a founding member of the English Speaking Scholastic Association of the River Plate (E.S.S.A.R.P.), The English Speaking Union (E.S.U.), Argentina and the Association of Bilingual Schools (A.C.O.B.I.). It has strong cultural ties with the British Council, Argentina. It is in the UNESCO Associated Schools Project and has also a Community Action Plan which works with the Cruzada Patagónica Foundation.
There are yearly international tours for sports and cultural purposes, and sports play an important part in the curriculum, especially rugby, hockey and athletics. Pupils and former students may join St. Brendan´s Rugby Club to continue their hockey and rugby practice at a professional level.
Music, Art and Drama are prevalent in the life of the school which is considered amongst the top twenty private bilingual schools in Argentina.
